This article below from GolfWeek Magazine goes into further detail about each iron.

On the heels of the successful launch of the GBB Callaway Epic and GBB Epic Sub Zero drivers, Callaway has announced the release of the new Epic and Epic Pro irons.

In many cases, manufacturers create a standard version of an iron, then make a better-player version of it by thinning the topline and sole, reducing the offset and taking out distance-enhancing technologies. But Callaway began this project by designing the Epic Pro first. The irons will cost $2,000 for a set of eight with steel shafts, offering what Callaway calls several new technologies to greatly enhance performance.

At its heart are three key design features, the first being a milled, variable-thickness cup-face hitting area. Instead of being a flat piece of metal, the edges of the face extend back so the hitting area can bend and flex more efficiently at impact. That helps create more ball speed and distance. Callaway used cup faces before, most recently in the Steelhead XR and the Big Bertha OS irons.

Callaway said that to make the face perform even better, the chassis has internal support beams that link the sole and the topline. Callaway calls the design an Exo-Cage, and it is extremely light. Even the transition area where the hosel blends into the face is hollow to save weight.

“That’s a first for us,” said Alan Hocknell, senior vice president of research and development for Callaway. “It has something to do with the way that we build this iron in two pieces. That allows us to gain access to that part of the head that is normally solid steel. We can hollow that out because we build the iron in two pieces.”

In a Callaway Apex iron, that area alone weighs about 61 grams, Hocknell said, but in the Epic Pro it is just 38 grams. In the 3- through 8-irons the Exo-Cage represents an average of just 43 percent of the total weight of each head, yet it stiffens the areas of the head that support the face.

“The added stiffness of the body makes the face cup work harder,” Hocknell said. “It flexes more during impact, and that allows us to generate more ball speed.”

After Hocknell and his team created a highly responsive face and saved significant weight in the body, they repurposed the discretionary weight in each head in the form of an internally positioned, tungsten-infused alloy.

“That weighting element is an alloy that is designed specifically for each iron in the set,” Hocknell said. “We can do that because we are mixing steel and tungsten together starting in a powder form, and we can choose the ratio when we put the two together.”

After the powders are mixed and baked in an oven at 2,500 degrees for 51 hours, they are formed into the exact shape required for each iron using a technique called metal-injection molding.

In the long irons the weights are lower in the heads to lower the center of gravity and make hitting high shots easier. Gradually the weight rises through the set, which raises the center of gravity progressively in the short irons to promote spin and control.

“We have not used this technique before, but we had to go to these extremes in order to get the amount of weight movement that we needed in the small format of a ‘Pro’-shaped iron,” Hocknell said.

The standard Epic irons have the same Exo-Cage body design, cup face and internal weighting, and they feature slightly larger faces and sole widths. The standard Epic also has more offset and stronger lofts.

The Epic Pro and Epic irons will be available June 16 and come standard with Project X LZ steel shafts and New Decade Platinum grips for $250 each or with UST Mamiya Recoil graphite shafts $280 each.

Now Available at The Rock: The Toulon Indianapolis Putter!

Now Available at Rock Hollow! Call in or stop by for details!
Indianapolis Putter

We refuse to believe that putter innovation is dead. There is always something better. Relentless pursuit led us to our one-of-a-kind Deep Diamond Mill face pattern. It redefined the performance of premium milled putters; then we set our sights on creating a truly unique and special putter. Something that outperformed everything. Something that transfixed you visually. Something that made you rethink everything you thought you knew about the construction of a putter.

Introducing the Indianapolis, our first foray on the world of super-high MOI mallets. This design has been in development for well over a year, and every single detail has been examined and perfected. When we first started developing Indianapolis, we knew we wanted to create something that was revolutionary in terms of performance and aesthetics.

We channeled the engineering spirit of IndyCar race car technicians, past and present, and crafted a design that incorporated four different materials. The face is made up of aircraft grade 6061-aluminum, giving you a soft, crisp feel. The sole is made up of 303 stainless steel, giving you maximum stability. The crown is made up of a lightweight carbon fiber composite, giving you a sleek look, while allowing us to distribute weight more effectively throughout the putter. Two 303 stainless steel or tungsten weights located on the back wings boosts the MOI to unbelievable highs, making this the best performing putter we’ve ever created.

The Indianapolis doesn’t just have the components of an IndyCar, it has the looks too. The silver finish of the aluminum face contrasts beautifully with the matte black shade of the carbon composite crown, making it incredibly easy to align properly. The Indianapolis also features nine prominent lines in the design that are either parallel or perpendicular to the target; add all that up, and you have one of the easiest putters to line up ever.

We set out to create a putter that raised the bar on construction, performance and aesthetics. The only thing it lowers is your score.

Deep Diamond Mill

Our unique pattern was designed after rigorous testing of 25 different mill patterns. The deep cross-hatch grooves control the sound and feel by channeling vibration and the small groove inside each diamond pattern is designed to improve the quality of the roll. The result is a putter where the sound and feel are tuned to match the distance that the ball rolls.

CounterBalanced Options

  • AR – Aggressive Release Series

AR Series putters feature two 45 gram tungsten weights, and our Toulon Design 14” SuperStroke Mid Slim 2.0 XL grip with a 50 gram butt end weight. Toulon Design AR Series putters help the golfer mimic the release point produced by a long or belly putter.

How It Works: Grip down approximately three inches from the butt end of the grip. During the stroke, the 50 gram butt end weight will slow down the top section of the putter, allowing the head to more aggressively pass the hands for a pronounced release of the head. The Toulon Design AR Series is available in all five models, and in a stock 38” length.

  • MR – Moderate Release Series

MR Series putters feature two 35 gram tungsten weights and a Toulon Design SuperStroke Pistol Tour or Mid Slim 2.0 grip with a 25 gram butt end weight. Toulon Design MR Series putters help the golfer generate a slightly more pronounced release of the putter head, while maintaining a more traditional stroke and grip length.

How It Works: Grip the putter as you normally would. During the stroke, the 25 gram butt end weight slightly slows down the top section of the putter, allowing the head to smoothly pass the hands for a smoother release of the putter. Because the MR Series utilizes standard lengths (33”- 36”) players will find this series very easy to adjust to. Toulon Design MR Series is available in all five models.

The Meaning Behind The Name

From the beginning, it was very clear what the name for our race car-like, high-MOI mallet would be: Indianapolis. In our never ending quest to create the best performing putters, our attention turned to the world of auto racing, where the difference between winning and losing can be minuscule, and ultimate precision is crucial. Nowhere is this more evident than at Indianapolis Speedway, home of the Indianapolis 500. This pinnacle of automobile races is where years and years of fine tuning is put to the test; that same patience and passion serves as inspiration for engineering this precision performance putter.

John Daly leads, seeking first win since 2004

Come on, Big John!  Get that win!!

THE WOODLANDS, Texas – John Daly says he’s not accustomed to seeing himself atop the leaderboard. He’s got a chance to do something else he hasn’t accomplished in a long time – win a golf tournament.

Daly shot a bogey-free 7-under 65 on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead over Kenny Perry in the PGA Tour Champions’ Insperity Invitational. The 51-year-old, two-time major champion will try for his first victory on the senior tour – and his first since the PGA Tour’s 2004 Buick Invitational.

”It’s not a familiar place I’m in. It’s going to be great,” Daly said.

Especially if Daly keeps putting the way he has at The Woodlands. He’s had only one bogey the first 36 holes and closed the second round with six birdies on the final 12 holes to reach 11-under 133.

Daly said he’s got a putter ”that I absolutely love, and I’m rolling it really good, and you never know, next week it may not show up, but I like the way I’m rolling this putter.”

Perry eagled the par-5 first hole in a 65. He knocked a 5-iron to 15 feet in two and then made the putt. He followed that with a birdie on the second hole to keep close to the leader.

”Good way to open your round,” Perry said.

Jerry Smith was another stroke behind after a 66. Tommy Armour III was 8 under after a 67, and Miguel Angel Jimenez followed at 8 under after a 66. Fred Couples (68) topped the group at 6 under.

Daly joined the 50-and-over set last season at The Woodlands. He said he was getting used to courses he had not played much before and feels things are coming together this season. His two best finishes this year have come in his last two events with a 12th at Duluth, Ga., on April 16 and a 13th with partner Michael Allen at the Legends of Golf in Ridgedale, Mo.

He believes he’s more comfortable this season and hopes to show that in the final round Sunday.

”So I’m just going to kind of get a little more aggressive like I have been this week,” Daly said.
