Daniel Berger signs multi-year deal with Callaway

Daniel Berger will make his first start of 2017 at the SBS Tournament of Champions as a member of Callaway’s Tour staff. The 23-year-old was officially unveiled on Wednesday after agreeing to terms on a multi-year deal that will see him use Callaway clubs, balls, gloves and an Odyssey putter going forward.

The 2015 PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year is coming off the best season of his professional career that saw him move to 34th in the Official World Golf Ranking, notch his first TOUR win at the FedEx St. Jude Classic and finish 25th in the season-long FedExCup Playoff standings.

“I joined the Callaway Tour Staff because of the equipment,” Berger said. “And more than anything I wanted to play the new (Epic) Driver. I’m excited for the year to get underway.”

Berger, who was on staff with TaylorMade for his first three years as a professional, will have a completely new bag setup this week in Hawaii that includes Callaway’s new GBB Epic driver and fairway wood, Apex CF 16 (3- and 4-iron) long irons, Apex Pro 16 mid and short irons (5-PW) and MD3 wedges. He’ll also switch from a Titleist Pro V1x ball to Callaway’s Chrome Soft X prototype.

Rounding out the bag setup will be a custom Odyssey Versa 2-Ball putter that replaces the TaylorMade Ghost Corza mallet he’s used going all the way back to junior golf. Berger finished sixth on TOUR last season in putts from five feet and 17th in three-putt avoidance.

To ease the putter transition, Odyssey reps added three black lines to the top of the head, along with a single black circle instead of the standard 2-Ball design, that gives the mallet a similar look at address to Berger’s old Ghost Corza.

“We’re thrilled to have Daniel join our Team,” Callaway SVP of global sports marketing, Tim Reed said. “We had a tremendous year in 2016 that included 3 major wins, 26 worldwide Tour wins, Jim Furyk’s 58, Patrick Reed’s dominance at the Ryder Cup, Danny Willett’s triumph at Augusta, and Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson’s unforgettable duel at The Open. And with our deep roster of proven winners and exciting young players like Daniel, we know that 2017 can be even better.”

Callaway Adds Patrick Rodgers to Tour Staff

A day after signing Daniel Berger to its tour staff, Callaway announced it had inked another young star, Patrick Rodgers, to a full line deal.

After a stellar collegiate career at Stanford that included 11 victories as well as a pair of appearances on the U.S. Walker Cup team, Rodgers turned pro in 2015, signing with Nike, and played well enough on the Web.com Tour as well as on the PGA Tour to earn exempt status on the PGA Tour. In his first full year on tour he won $1.3 million.

After Nike exited the equipment business in August, it was likely Rodgers would move on and Callaway, says Rodgers, was the best fit.

“I’ve been amazed in testing and playing Callaway equipment, and I know these are the best clubs to help me compete and take my game to the next level on tour,” said Rodgers, who will play Callaway clubs and balls as well as an Odyssey putter. “I can’t wait to get this season going and off to a great start.”

Report: Rory McIlroy using Callaway clubs, Titleist ball to start 2017

Tiger Woods’ equipment free agency might be more important financially, but Rory McIlroy’s is more interesting to me. The No. 2 golfer on the planet said last fall that he would be testing out a variety of clubs over the next few months (and maybe years). It seems as if he has settled on something.

According to No Laying Up, McIlroy will start the 2017 European Tour season with Callaway irons and driver. He will play the Titleist ProV1x ball, Titleist wedges and tinker with an Odyssey putter.

The new Callaway clubs will include the Callaway GBB Epic Sub Zero driver and Callaway Custom Apex MB irons.

There is no plan to sign a deal with Callaway (or any other company) in 2017, according to No Laying Up. McIlroy, as you might remember, played TaylorMade woods and driver in China in November at the HSBC Champions. He was still using his Nike irons then.

Now it seems as if he has moved completely away from Nike, though, as he won’t have the golf ball or irons in his bag at the BMW South African Open in two weeks. This will be intriguing to follow throughout the year. Will McIlroy stick with Callaway for all 12 months? Will he keep the TaylorMade woods? Will he switch back to Nike wedges at some point?

It make sense for McIlroy to mix and match equipment this season before he signs a new equipment deal at some point in 2018 or beyond. Either way, a locked-in McIlroy with all the clubs he wants for a loaded-up 2017 is a hell of a thought. That No. 1 ranking in the world has never looked more vulnerable.
